What Goes Around Comes Around
There is, in fact, one force that may hold the same amount of power as death.
Karma.
We all love to envision ourselves as being owners of a "pure bead of life." But what meaning goes behind the word 'pure?' Fate most likely plays a role in this: we cannot deem ourselves tainted by immorality if our actions are not under our own control. If our fate is already written in the stars, then what does it matter if we consciously decide to make 'bad' decisions? Isn't it simply our fate to do so?
But consider the idea that we don't all have "pure bead[s] of life." Replace the idea of fate with karma. Life is not necessarily spontaneous, per say, but rather our 'fates' are determined by the kindness and agony we inflict upon others. Every happy or sad ending is the result of what we have done in our past. We are not pure. We are intricate.
Woolf continuously emphasized the amount of energy our lives hold throughout her piece, implying that every meager form of life has vitality. Consider the idea that our actions hold energy as well. To think that your own little actions could one day affect your whole quality of life? It's astonishing, but certainly not a theory to be disregarded. There is not a soul on this Earth that knows all the answers to life-- all that is known is that death is the only thing we can someday accept with confidence. The rest of our destiny: how we die, how we lead up to the moment of our death, our victories, our tragedies, the highs and the lows... unless it's in the past, there's no way to know what our life personally holds. It's insanely common to hear the phrase, "life isn't fair." Yet, karma is the one of the only believable forces to ever have evened the playing field.
It's not all too realistic to bank our whole lives on the certainty that "if I do good things, then good things will happen to me." However, we can never be too careful. If it exists, karma is like death: simply unescapable. I like to believe, however, that karma holds more power than death. Death only plays one final role in the timeline of your life... karma is always there.
Wow Abby! This is such an amazing post! It is known that death is upon us, but we never realize that karma is as well, constantly following us. Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteHi Abby! I really enjoyed reading your post this week. I also enjoy your mindset on the correlation between karma, death, and their effects. I think it's much better to think about karma because that is something you can control a bit more than the completely unexpected fate of death.
